Model Aviation, Model Rocketry Education for IX and X standards was introduced as part of Work Experience subject in the academic year 2014-15, also known as STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics). Model Aviation or Aero-modeling is basically the design, construction and flying of model airplanes, helicopters and rockets. It is both a hobby and an international sport which not only excites the imagination and generates enthusiasm but also helps to understand certain laws of physics and help ignites the experimenting temper in young minds.
Model Aircrafts are made using variety of materials including balsa wood, propellers, rubber bands, sand paper, butter paper, clay etc. Students learn aero-dynamics by constructing rubber powered model aircrafts, gliders which fly high when built with at-most precision, with wings accurately attached at the Centre of Gravity. Every failure in construction is a motivation to attain perfection, and aids in building up perseverance among children.
Model Rocketry is another exciting, yet educative program where students make model rockets with balsa wood and motor. The construction process itself develops team spirit, hand and eye coordination, innovative skills and gradually inspires them to take up career as a pilot, Aircraft Designer, Aircraft maintenance Technician, Aero-space Engineer etc.
RCJPS is the only school in India to introduce Model Aviation and Model Rocketry as part of the high school curriculum. Mrs. Sudha Menon, appointed as mathematics teacher, is a trained aero-modeling Instructor and a member of AMA (Aero-modelers Association of India, New Delhi). She was awarded for being the First lady Aero-modeling Instructor officially appointed in any schools in India, at the Annual Aero-Modelers Meet Held at Rajkot on 21 Feb, 2016.
Sudha, along with her team conducted a successful Rocket Launch at our school premises on 3 Feb 2016, built by the students of X standard. Students and teachers were tremendously motivated and determined to conduct more such events which invokes innovative attitude and practical application of science and mathematics.
